March 6, 2018 was Census day in New Zealand—meaning Kiwis had to participate or face legal penalties.
But for some New Zealanders, filling out this required form wasn’t as easy as logging onto a website or filling out a paper document.
For people who are blind or visually impaired, the newly augmented online Census system was easy to navigate and fully accessible.
However, the individual code required to fill out said form was sent in an inaccessible format and little to no information could be obtained from the Statistics New Zealand website.
Statistics New Zealand told print impaired people they were unable to supply the code via email or text and either a person from Statistics New Zealand could come to the home and read out the code, or the blind person could contact an agency that served the blind which had the codes. ess/102013374/national-claims-disability-access-issues-will-undermine-nationwide-census-results
For other New Zealanders—especially those in rural areas, the codes or forms never arrived in the post. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/102065497/census-complaints-vague-questions-delays-in-paperwork
